Best Maldives resorts for families in 2025

Not every Maldives resort works equally well with children. Here is how to find the one that fits your family, your ages, and how you want the week to feel.

The Maldives is often described as a couples destination. That description reflects where the marketing has always pointed, but not where the guests actually come from. Families, multi-generational groups, and parents travelling with older children make up a significant proportion of Maldives travellers every year. The challenge is choosing the right property, because the differences between resorts are more pronounced for families than for any other traveller profile.

What makes a Maldives resort right for families

There are five things that genuinely matter when evaluating a Maldives resort for a family trip. The presence of a children's club is one of them, but it is not the most important. The five are: villa size and configuration, how the resort handles very young children, reef and water access, transfer time and logistics, and whether the island environment is safe and navigable for children.

Soneva Fushi, the benchmark for family resorts

Soneva Fushi in Baa Atoll is the resort most consistently recommended for families, and for good reason. The Den, Soneva's children's programme, is run by qualified educators from 9am to 9pm daily and accepts children from age four. It is not a babysitting service, it is a genuinely stimulating environment with crafts, cooking, marine biology, stargazing, and outdoor activities that older children engage with just as readily as younger ones.

The villa range at Fushi is the most generous of any Maldives resort. Beach villas from one to nine bedrooms allow families of any size to stay together in a single property. The nine-bedroom Reserve is the largest private villa complex in the Maldives and is taken regularly by multi-generational groups. The beach setting also removes the logistical difficulty of very young children and overwater walkways. At Fushi you step from your villa directly onto sand.

The house reef at Fushi is exceptional and accessible from the beach. Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and Hanifaru Bay, 20 minutes by boat, is one of the finest manta ray aggregation sites in the world from August to November. For families where the marine experience is the point of the trip, this location is hard to match.

Transfer time is 25 minutes by seaplane from Malé, one of the shorter connections in the Maldives. For families travelling with young children, the short transfer matters.

Soneva Jani, for families who want the overwater experience

Soneva Jani in Noonu Atoll suits families with older children more naturally than Fushi. The overwater villas with private pools and water slides into the lagoon are a strong draw for children above the age of eight, and the 2 and 3-bedroom Water Reserves allow families to stay together above a remarkable shallow lagoon. The Island Retreat villas are beach-based and provide a land setting for families who want both options.

The Den is also present at Jani, with a similar programme to Fushi. The lagoon is extraordinarily clear and calm, making it excellent for supervised swimming and paddling with young children. The transfer is 45 minutes by seaplane, or a domestic flight to Maafaru Airport followed by a 15-minute speedboat, which is a reasonable option for families arriving on late connections.

JOALI Maldives, for families who value design and arts

JOALI in Raa Atoll is a distinct choice for families with older children who are interested in art, design, and culture. The resort is built around a concept of immersive art, with commissioned works throughout the island by international artists. The children's programme reflects this ethos, with art workshops and creative sessions that work better for children aged ten and above than for very young ones.

The villas at JOALI are generously sized, with water villas and beach villas available. The seaplane transfer from Malé is approximately 35 minutes. The house reef is good and snorkelling is accessible directly from the island. JOALI is the right choice for a family that wants something visually and intellectually distinctive, rather than the traditional Maldives aesthetic.

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru, for families focused on marine life

Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru is the most marine-biology-focused resort in the Maldives. The resort's Marine Discovery Centre, run in partnership with the Maldives Marine Research Institute, offers a dedicated programme for children that includes reef education, marine biology workshops, and snorkelling guided by resident marine biologists. For a family where the children have a genuine interest in marine life, this is unmatched.

The villa range includes multi-bedroom beach bungalows and overwater suites, and the resort's private island setting is safe and contained. The transfer is 40 minutes by seaplane from Malé.

One&Only Reethi Rah, for families who want scale and activity

Reethi Rah is one of the largest private islands in the Maldives. The scale is genuinely unusual, with multiple beaches, 11 dining and bar venues, a full water sports centre, and a children's club with its own pool. The resort suits families who want range, whether that means the parents having time alone while children are engaged in a structured programme, or the whole family doing different activities and reconvening for dinner.

The villas are large and the beach villa configurations suit families well. The transfer is 50 minutes by speedboat from Malé, which avoids the seaplane logistics entirely and allows for late international arrivals.

What to think about before you choose

The age of your children matters more than any other factor. Resorts with overwater walkways and open water access require care with toddlers and children under five. Beach resorts with contained island environments are easier for the youngest children. The children's club quality varies significantly between properties, and many are designed more as supervision than genuine engagement. Soneva's Den is the exception, not the rule.

Villa size relative to your group is often underestimated. Two adults and three children in a one-bedroom villa for seven nights is a recipe for a tense holiday regardless of how beautiful the setting is. Sizing up to a two or three-bedroom villa adds meaningfully to the cost but transforms the experience.

Our recommendation

For most families travelling to the Maldives for the first time, Soneva Fushi is the right starting point. The Den, the beach setting, the house reef, the villa range, and the short seaplane transfer combine to remove the friction points that can make a luxury resort trip with children harder than expected.

For families returning to the Maldives or specifically wanting the overwater experience, Soneva Jani with a two-bedroom Water Reserve is the natural step.

For families where the children are teenagers or older, JOALI or Four Seasons Landaa offer something more distinctive and age-appropriate than the traditional children's club model.
