The seven steps, in order
| Step | What to do | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Fix your dates | Choose a travel window and the number of nights | Timing moves the price more than the hotel does |
| 2. Split the two cities | Decide the Makkah and Madinah nights | Seven nights, four or five in Makkah, is a common first structure |
| 3. Choose hotel and view | Pick the property and the view category | Haram View does not mean the Kaaba is visible |
| 4. Confirm the visa route | Check current requirements on the official Nusuk platform | Rules change; verify before booking non-refundable travel |
| 5. Verify who you are paying | Company account, written confirmation, real photos | Never pay a personal account |
| 6. Book and confirm in writing | Hotel, room category, view, meal plan, occupancy | Keep every detail on the confirmation |
| 7. Prepare to travel | Vaccination record, transfers, arrival plan | Allow more time than you expect inside the mosque |

First Umrah? Let us walk you through it.
Tell us your dates and who is travelling. We will explain each step, quote the hotel honestly, and tell you what to verify yourself rather than take on trust.
Ask Us Anything on WhatsAppStep 1 and 2: dates, nights and the two cities
Almost every first Umrah splits between Makkah and Madinah. A common structure is seven nights, four or five in Makkah and two or three in Madinah, which gives a settled pace without rushing either city. If you are flying long-haul from the United States, Malaysia or Australia, ten to fourteen nights makes far better use of the journey.
Fix the dates before the hotel. Timing moves the price more than any other decision, and our cheapest months guide shows where the quiet windows fall. If you are considering Ramadan, read the Ramadan booking guide first, because the planning horizon is completely different.
Step 3: choosing the hotel and the view category
Inside the Clock Tower, the two decisions that determine your experience are which hotel and which view category. Our complete hotels guide compares all seven properties, and our Kaaba View vs Haram View guide explains the distinction that catches out more first-time pilgrims than anything else: a room described as Haram View may not show the Kaaba at all.
If you are travelling with parents or children, read the accessibility guide or the family rooms guide before you choose, because both change which hotel is right.
Step 4: the visa and the Nusuk platform
Nusuk is Saudi Arabia's official digital platform for Umrah. It is where the Umrah eVisa is applied for, where permits to perform Umrah and to visit the Rawdah in Madinah are booked, and where approved bookings are held. Requirements have changed several times in recent years, including the linking of accommodation to visa applications and seasonal suspensions around the Hajj period.
Because of that, we will not print a fixed checklist that could be out of date by the time you read it. Verify the current requirements directly on the official Nusuk platform at nusuk.sa and on Saudi Arabia's official travel guidance at visitsaudi.com before you book non-refundable flights. The elements that have been consistent are a passport with sufficient validity, a digital photograph, meningococcal vaccination, and confirmed accommodation.
On the mahram question: Saudi visa rules no longer require a woman to travel with a mahram to obtain an Umrah visa or enter the Kingdom. Individual operators may still apply their own conditions, and religious opinion on the matter varies, so confirm both with your operator and, if it matters to you, with a scholar you trust.
Step 5: how to avoid fake listings and bad bookings
Umrah accommodation attracts fraud because demand is high, seasonal and emotional. These are the checks that matter, and none of them takes more than a few minutes.
- Never pay into a personal bank account. A legitimate company invoices from a company account. This single rule prevents most losses.
- Get the exact hotel name and room category in writing before payment. "5-star near Haram" is not a booking. "Swissôtel Makkah" and "Swissôtel Al Maqam Makkah" are different hotels, and travellers regularly arrive at the wrong one.
- Ask for a real photograph of the room and the view, not a marketing image. If nobody can produce one, they may not hold the room.
- Check the company exists and can be reached. A real phone number, a real address, a named person who answers.
- Be sceptical of prices far below the market in a peak period. In Ramadan especially, a rate that looks too good usually reflects a room category that is not what you think it is.
- Keep everything in writing. Dates, hotel, room category, view category, meal plan, occupancy, and what happens if the hotel cannot honour it.

Step 6 and 7: booking, then arriving
Once the hotel is confirmed in writing, the remaining pieces are flights, transfers and the Madinah leg if you are including one. We can arrange the whole trip or the hotel alone, depending on what you need; our packages page explains the difference between hotel-only and full package bookings.
Before you fly, have these ready: your visa confirmation, your hotel confirmation showing the room and view category, your vaccination record, and a plan for how you will travel from Jeddah to Makkah. On arrival, expect the walk inside Masjid al-Haram to be longer than you imagined; our distance and access guide explains what the route actually involves.
Ready to start with the hotel?
The hotel is the piece that sells out first, so it is the sensible place to begin. Send your dates and we will come back with live rates, real photos and the room category in writing.

Decide your dates and nights, choose a hotel and view category, confirm your Umrah visa route, then book with a provider who will show you the actual room category and view in writing before you pay. Booking the hotel and arranging the visa are separate steps, and either can be done first.
Nusuk is Saudi Arabia's official digital platform for Umrah. Saudi rules no longer require a woman to travel with a mahram to obtain an Umrah visa or enter the Kingdom. It is, provided you check who you are paying. Fake listings and cloned confirmations are a known problem for Umrah accommodation. Verify the company, insist on the exact hotel and room category in writing, never pay to a personal account, and ask for a real photograph of the room and view before payment.
For regular season, four to six weeks gives good availability and sensible rates. For Ramadan, six to twelve months, and the last ten nights need the earliest booking of all. Family configurations and Kaaba view rooms sell out before standard rooms in every season.
Meningococcal vaccination is a standard requirement for pilgrims, and other requirements can apply depending on your nationality and travel history. Requirements are updated periodically, so confirm the current list with official Saudi guidance and your own health provider before you travel.
Travellers holding an eligible Saudi tourist eVisa have been able to perform Umrah outside the Hajj season, subject to registering and obtaining the required permit. Rules change and there are seasonal suspensions around Hajj, so verify the current position on the official Nusuk platform before booking non-refundable travel.
